Safety training took on a western twist recently as MTM Transit’s Tucson team hosted a cowboy-themed Paratransit Roadeo Safety Blitz. Combining friendly competition with hands-on learning, the event challenged our Sun Shuttle drivers to complete a series of real-world driving obstacles while reinforcing the safe driving habits that help create a positive passenger experience every day.
Drivers navigated a course that tested backing, maneuvering through a serpentine path, crossing speed bumps, stopping at a simulated crosswalk, and positioning a wheelchair ramp at a designated drop-off area. While participants raced against the clock, penalties were assessed for hitting cones, missing steps, or completing obstacles incorrectly, proving that precision and safety matter more than speed alone.
To reinforce the passenger perspective, a cup of water was placed on the hood of each vehicle throughout the course. The cup represented a rider, reminding drivers that every turn, acceleration, and stop impacts passenger comfort. Successfully completing the course required smooth, controlled driving just as much as it required efficiency.
The event also emphasized important operational skills, including GOAL (Get Out And Look) during backing maneuvers and proper vehicle positioning for wheelchair ramp deployment. Participants learned firsthand how stopping too close to or too far from a curb can create barriers to safe accessibility for riders.
What made the Roadeo especially meaningful was that many of the challenges were inspired by passenger feedback. By turning real passenger concerns into interactive training exercises, the Tucson team created a fun and engaging way to strengthen skills that directly impact comfort, confidence, and accessibility. The event brought drivers, supervisors, and coworkers together around a shared commitment to safety, demonstrating that learning can be both impactful and enjoyable.
At MTM Transit, safety is more than a requirement. It’s a commitment to providing every rider with a safe, comfortable, and reliable experience. The Tucson team’s Paratransit Roadeo was a great reminder that while competition may make learning fun, the skills developed along the way help make service safer for everyone.
