At MTM Transit, we believe transportation does more than move people from point A to point B. It connects communities, opens doors to opportunity, and serves as a powerful force for both social good and environmental stewardship. We’re proud to highlight how sustainable practices and reliable community transit can work together to create lasting, positive impact on our planet and on the lives of the people we serve nationwide every day.
Powering a Greener Future: MTM Transit’s Sustainability Efforts
Sustainability is a fundamental principle at MTM Transit. We’re actively transitioning our operations to reduce emissions, conserve resources, and lead by example in the transit industry.
One of the most visible ways we’re making a difference is through fleet modernization. Hybrid and electric vehicles now make up more than 20% of our fleet, helping us reduce our annual fuel consumption by nearly 60,000 gallons and cut CO₂ emissions by more than 400 metric tons. We’ve also significantly lowered other pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, and particulate matter.
We’re continually putting electric vehicles into service in key locations. In Tucson’s Sabino Canyon Recreation Area, new 23-passenger electric shuttles provide quiet, zero-emission service along the scenic Bear Canyon route. These vehicles protect the sensitive desert environment while giving visitors a peaceful, enjoyable experience with interpretive audio programs—proving that sustainability and guest satisfaction go hand in hand.
We also have ecofriendly vehicles in operation in other locations, such as electric Nissan Leafs in Tracy, California, and Chevy Bolts in Bend, Oregon, supporting daily operations with lower costs and fewer maintenance needs. As older vehicles retire, we’re prioritizing hybrids like the Chrysler Pacifica and Toyota Sienna, along with fully electric options such as the Ford E-Transit.
Beyond vehicles, our commitment extends to our overall operations and facilities:
- Digital platforms like Mobility Direct and Trackit have dramatically reduced paper waste in applications, inspections, and reporting.
- Recycling programs for metals, lubricants, paper, and e-waste at locations nationwide, with proceeds reinvested in local team activities.
- Ongoing exploration of solar lighting and other green technologies.
These efforts reflect our broader goal: to become the transit industry’s premier green partner while delivering reliable, high-quality service.
The Social Value of Reliable Transit Systems
While cleaner vehicles reduce environmental impact, the true power of community transit lies in the connections it creates. Reliable transportation improves access to essential services—like jobs, healthcare, education, grocery stores, and social activities—particularly for seniors, individuals with disabilities, low-income families, and those without personal vehicles.
By bridging transportation gaps, MTM Transit helps reduce social isolation and fosters stronger, more inclusive communities. Riders gain independence, maintain social ties, access preventive healthcare and other services, and participate more fully in community life. These benefits ripple outward: employed residents strengthen local economies, healthier individuals reduce strain on social services, and connected neighborhoods become more resilient.
Across the country, we partner with local governments, human service agencies, and community organizations to deliver tailored solutions for fixed-route shuttles, paratransit, or microtransit options. These collaborations ensure transportation aligns with the unique needs of each community we serve, maximizing both efficiency and social impact.
Moving Forward Together
From national parks like Sabino Canyon to urban and rural communities across the country, MTM Transit’s work demonstrates that sustainable transit and community-focused service are two sides of the same coin. Every mile driven in an electric shuttle, every rider connected to their community, and every partnership strengthened contributes to a more sustainable and equitable future. Our teams take pride in operating services that protect natural spaces, lower emissions, support local economies, and—most importantly—help people live fuller, more connected lives.
Sustainability and community impact aren’t just buzzwords at MTM Transit. They’re guiding principles embedded in how we operate every day. As we continue expanding our green fleet, adopting smarter technologies, and deepening community partnerships, we remain committed to delivering transportation solutions that are environmentally responsible and socially transformative.
Thank you to our dedicated team members, transit agency partners, and the communities we serve for making this important work possible. Together, we’re not just moving people—we’re driving meaningful change.
