In the daily work of a paratransit driver, the focus is always on safety, reliability, and compassionate service for passengers with disabilities. But recently in Denver, MTM Transit driver Eric Worthington showed that true heroism can emerge in an instant.
While transporting a passenger through a neighborhood, Eric was flagged down by a distressed individual who pointed out a nearby house that had caught fire. The person had no cell phone, so Eric immediately contacted MTM Transit’s local dispatch team and requested they call 911. His quick action ensured emergency responders were on the way.
As the situation unfolded, Eric heard screaming coming from behind the house. He went to investigate and discovered a woman lying on the ground who had jumped from a second-story window to escape the flames. Injured but conscious, she pointed toward a second-story bedroom window, where a child was still trapped inside.
A neighbor quickly brought a ladder. Without hesitation, Eric and the neighbor climbed up, reached the child, and brought them safely to the ground. Thanks to Eric’s decisive and calm response, a life was saved.
“Eric did a tremendous job of focusing on the issue and communicating properly, then showed true selflessness by jumping into action to contribute to saving a life,” said MTM Transit’s Denver General Manager Chip Fogleman. “We are incredibly thankful for his quick thinking and heroic actions.”
Recognition for Bravery
On June 16, Eric was formally recognized for his heroism at an MTM Transit Safety Meeting. Representatives from the Denver Regional Transportation District (RTD) attended the event to personally express their appreciation. MTM Transit proudly operates the RTD’s ADA paratransit services, and days like this highlight the exceptional caliber of drivers entrusted with this important work.
