Transit Talks: Driving Growth and Opportunity in Transit Industry Careers

Welcome to our quarterly Transit Talks series, where MTM Transit leaders share insights on key industry trends. In 2025, the demand for transit services continues to grow—creating new transit industry careers for both our organization and the talented professionals who power our success.

In this edition, we sat down with Andrea Mahoney, Senior Manager of HR Operations, and Maureen Reed, Business Development Recruiter, to discuss how MTM Transit is expanding our footprint, attracting top industry talent, and maintaining the supportive culture that sets us apart.

Growth, Expansion, and Industry Leadership in Transit Industry Careers

With transit needs on the rise, MTM Transit is expanding our reach nationwide—both as a service provider and an employer of choice. “We are quickly becoming a bigger presence among job seekers, and word of mouth is everything,” Mahoney said. “The more we grow, the more people talk about us—and that opens doors to top talent looking for impactful transit industry careers.”

A key driver of this expansion has been the growth of our Business Development team, which has allowed us to engage in more new business opportunities, build stronger industry relationships, and expand our workforce. “By strengthening our recruitment efforts, we’re not just filling positions—we’re building a bench of strong, experienced professionals ready to advance their transit industry careers,” added Reed.

A “Big Company, Small Family” Culture for Transit Professionals

Despite our rapid expansion, MTM Transit remains committed to fostering a collaborative, people-first culture.

“Job seekers want the benefits of working for a large company but don’t want to feel like just a number,” said Mahoney. “At MTM Transit, we strike that balance—we offer big-company resources while maintaining a supportive, tight-knit environment. Employees know they are valued, heard, and part of something bigger.”

Strong leadership also plays a crucial role in employee satisfaction and retention. “Having seasoned leaders to turn to makes all the difference,” Reed emphasized. “People stay when they feel supported, and that’s what we strive for at every level.”

How MTM Transit Attracts and Retains Top Talent

To stay competitive in the job market, visibility and networking are key. “The power of LinkedIn has been a game-changer,” said Reed. “It has brought MTM Transit’s name further into the spotlight, helping us connect with the right candidates pursuing transit industry careers.”

Our Business Development team also plays a unique role in recruitment. “Because they have direct industry relationships, they help us identify top players—which strengthens our talent pipeline,” Mahoney explained.

Once employees join MTM Transit, our investment in their growth doesn’t stop. Internal referrals and mentorship programs create stronger, more engaged teams, while career development initiatives provide clear paths for advancement. “When employees refer someone, they’ve already shared our culture and expectations—resulting in stronger hires and higher retention,” said Mahoney.

Diversity, Leadership, and the Future of Hiring in Transit

MTM Transit is proud to be a leader in diversity, equity, and inclusion—with a strong commitment to female leadership.

“Watching Alaina Macia—our President and CEO—emerge as a powerful force in a male-dominated industry is inspiring,” said Mahoney. “Her leadership has propelled MTM Transit forward while opening doors for other women in transit. We’re not just hiring—we’re shaping the future of the industry.”

As we continue expanding, MTM Transit is actively recruiting for key roles, including General Managers, Safety and Training Managers, and Fleet Technicians. “Fleet Technician recruitment is particularly challenging due to a nationwide shortage, which is why we’ve designated a subject matter expert to tackle this need,” explained Mahoney. Additionally, we are seeking Program Managers with backgrounds in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and social services to support our growing mobility management and ADA paratransit eligibility operations.

What Makes an MTM Transit Employee?

Beyond technical skills, we seek adaptability, problem-solving skills, and a deep commitment to service.

“The transit industry is constantly evolving—with changing routes, staffing challenges, and emerging technologies,” said Mahoney. “Our ideal candidates don’t just manage change—they embrace it while maintaining exceptional service.”

But perhaps most importantly, MTM Transit employees share a passion for making a difference. “At the core of everything we do is a desire to help others,” Reed concluded. “That’s what makes MTM Transit stand out.”
