Let’s Talk Stoplight Safety: Teams Participate in Intersection Safety Blitzes

At MTM Transit, safety is more than just a policy—it’s a core value that drives everything we do. That’s why we’re proud to share highlights from recent Safety Blitzes hosted at MTM Transit locations across the country, each focused on an essential aspect of safe driving: controlled intersection and stop light safety.

From the streets of Martin County and Sarasota, Florida, to the busy roadways of Reno, Nevada and the mountainous terrain of Denver, Colorado, our Vehicle Operators and leadership teams took time to emphasize and reinforce the importance of navigating intersections safely and responsibly.

Controlled Intersection and Stoplight Safety

Intersections are one of the most common—and most dangerous—places for vehicle collisions, especially in public transit environments where vehicles make frequent stops and carry vulnerable passengers. These Safety Blitzes served as focused training sessions and discussion forums, allowing operators to refresh their knowledge and gain new insights on best practices for safe stops.

Each location tailored the blitz to meet their local needs, but a central discussion point was the 8 Steps to a Successful and Safe Intersection Stop, which include:

  1. Look Ahead: Maintain awareness of what’s coming up on the road.
  2. Scan for Hazards: Keep an eye out for pedestrians, turning vehicles, and unexpected obstacles.
  3. Cover Your Brakes and Anticipate Stale Green Lights: Prepare for lights that may turn yellow as you approach.
  4. Look Around: Don’t just focus forward; check mirrors and your surroundings.
  5. Make a Smooth, Easy Stop: Sudden stops can be uncomfortable or unsafe for passengers.
  6. Make a Full, Complete Three-Second Stop: Rolling stops don’t count!
  7. Look Left, Look Right, Look Left Again: The classic triple check before proceeding.
  8. Proceed Slowly and with Caution: Especially in high-traffic or pedestrian-heavy areas.

Driving a Culture of Safety

These safety blitzes weren’t just box-checking exercises. They were interactive and engaging, offering operators a chance to ask questions, share experiences, and recommit to MTM Transit’s safety-first mindset. Leadership at each location also participated, showing their support for a strong safety culture from the top down.

In addition to technical training, these events helped foster a sense of team pride and accountability. Vehicle Operators play a critical role in public safety, and initiatives like these reinforce that every safe stop matters—not only for our passengers but for pedestrians, cyclists, and fellow motorists.

As MTM Transit continues to grow and serve new communities, our commitment to safety remains unwavering. We’re proud of our teams in Florida, Nevada, and Colorado for leading the charge and keeping safety at the forefront of their operations.

Stay tuned as we continue to highlight safety initiatives across the nation—and remember, every trip starts with safety.
