At MTM Transit, we’re committed to leading the charge in sustainability within the transit industry through initiatives like green fleets and technology. Led by our Green Team, our recent initiatives underscore this dedication and showcase our ongoing efforts to reduce our environmental footprint and make a positive impact on the planet.
Increasing Fleet Sustainability
In the first quarter of 2024, MTM Transit achieved a significant milestone by incorporating additional hybrid and electric vehicles into our operations. Hybrid and electric vehicles now make up an impressive 19.4% of our fleet. This transition has been instrumental in covering 289,881 miles in the first quarter of 2024, leading to a remarkable reduction in fuel consumption of more than 11,000 gallons. Additionally, our CO2 emissions have decreased by approximately 104 metric tons, alongside a substantial removal of pollutants like nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, and particulate matter from our emissions. These strides bring us closer to our goal of having 20% of our fleet comprised of hybrid and electric vehicles, aligning with our vision for a greener future.
Reducing Paper Waste through Technology
Embracing technology solutions such as Trackit and our proprietary Mobility Direct platform have enabled us to significantly reduce paper waste across various operations. From Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) paratransit applications and evaluations being completed online via Mobility Direct to supporting processes like daily vehicle inspections and accident reporting flowing through Trackit, our digital platforms have streamlined processes while minimizing environmental impact. Looking ahead, we’re planning to integrate Optical Character Recognition (OCR) into our Mobility Direct platform, further enhancing our paper waste reduction efforts and promoting more efficient, eco-friendly practices.
Introducing Recycling Initiatives and Local Collaborations
MTM Transit’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond our operations to encompass recycling initiatives at our locations nationwide. We’ve implemented proactive measures to recycle metals, lubricants, and paper, partnering with local vendors to ensure proper disposal and recycling procedures. The funds generated from these recycling activities and scrapping endeavors are reinvested back into our teams, supporting employee activities and celebrations at each location. This circular approach not only reduces waste but also fosters a culture of environmental stewardship and community engagement.
