Welcoming New Buses in Hawaiʻi County

Recently, the County of Hawaiʻi Mass Transit, alongside MTM Transit, hosted a vehicle blessing to introduce their newest buses into service. This special event, held in partnership with local leaders and cultural practitioners, went beyond a simple ribbon-cutting. Each bus received a traditional pule (prayer) and a sprinkling of wai (water), calling for protection for everyone—passengers, drivers, and fellow travelers—who will depend on these vehicles.

On behalf of the county, MTM Transit operates the Hele-On Kako’o Island-Wide Paratransit Service. Hele-On, the County’s public transportation system, offers complementary Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) paratransit through its Hele-On Kako’o service. The new vehicles will ensure the county and MTM Transit have the ability to provide local passengers with safe, reliable paratransit services possible.

The ceremony underscored that public transit on Hawaiʻi Island is more than just transportation; it’s a vital thread that weaves together our communities. These buses are lifelines for kūpuna, families, and workers, connecting them to schools, essential services, and community gatherings.

Standing alongside the dedicated staff of Hawaiʻi County Mass Transit, our team felt immense pride as we dedicated these new buses to the people of the island. We are excited to see them hit the road as we remain committed to supporting a transit system built on safety, respect, and aloha for all.
