Welcome back to our quarterly Transit Talks series, where MTM Transit leaders share their insights on key industry trends.
When it comes to streamlining Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) paratransit eligibility, MTM Transit is leading the way with Mobility Direct, a powerful SaaS (Software as a Service) platform tailored to meet the evolving needs of transit agencies nationwide.
At the helm of its development and implementation is Todd Schonhoff, MTM Transit’s Director of Application Development. Learn more from his recent interview below as he discusses how his team oversees the design, build, and maintenance of both Mobility Direct and Reveal, working closely with our clients to ensure the platforms continuously evolve to meet their needs.
What is Mobility Direct?
Mobility Direct is a web-based product designed and built to assist transit agencies with managing their ADA paratransit assessment and eligibility workflows. By working directly with MTM Transit’s operational leadership, Todd’s team ensures that the product roadmap stays aligned with client priorities, regardless of agency size. These routine check-ins—every other week—help ensure consistent improvements and innovation.
One of the platform’s upcoming enhancements is a newly developed Applicant Portal. This update will give agencies and applicants more flexibility; specifically, clients can control what applicants see and what actions they can take within the portal, a feature Todd says will be a key differentiator from competitors.
What Makes Mobility Direct a SaaS Product?
Mobility Direct is delivered as a SaaS product—meaning it’s a web-based application hosted in the cloud and typically accessed through a subscription model.
“Sometimes you’ll hear it referred to as on-demand software,” said Todd. “You don’t have to install it on your computer. You just log in and use it when you need it.”
This software model brings many advantages: updates and fixes can be rolled out seamlessly, with little or no system downtime. It also allows for faster iteration and testing, which streamlines development while keeping the user experience smooth and uninterrupted.
For clients, implementation is simpler without the need for on-site installations. Clients find a SaaS arrangement impactful for them as it allows them the ability to “own” the platform without the responsibilities from a technical standpoint. It also allows the cost associated with the software to be shared amongst many purchasers vs. being fully burdened with the cost directly on their own.
Enhancing the ADA Eligibility Process
Beyond technical benefits, Mobility Direct plays a critical role in ensuring ADA compliance. The eligibility process for paratransit services isn’t just a formality—it’s essential for ensuring services reach those who truly need them.
“A structured process ensures the agency meets federal mandates and avoids potential legal challenges or funding loss,” Todd said. It also supports cost control, service planning, and public transparency.
Looking Ahead
Mobility Direct exemplifies how SaaS technology can elevate public transit solutions. By focusing on the specific needs of paratransit operations and staying in sync with agency goals, MTM Transit continues to offer a forward-thinking, scalable platform that’s transforming the way eligibility and compliance are managed.
As updates like the new Applicant Portal roll out, MTM Transit’s clients can expect even more flexibility, efficiency, and user empowerment—proving that Mobility Direct isn’t just software. It’s a strategic tool for accessible, compliant, and well-managed transit services.
