At MTM Transit, we know that safe, reliable transportation starts behind the scenes in the maintenance shop. As the transportation industry faces a shrinking pool of skilled technicians, we’re taking action by investing in the future of the workforce through our Maintenance Apprentice Technician Program.
This comprehensive program is designed to attract new talent, support career changers, and create meaningful, long-term career opportunities in vehicle maintenance.
A Career Path with Purpose
MTM Transit’s Maintenance Apprentice Technician Program was built with one goal in mind: develop highly skilled technicians through structured training, hands-on experience, and mentorship. Whether you’re a recent high school graduate, a technical school student, or someone looking to transition into a new career path, this program provides a clear and supported entry into the transit maintenance field.
We actively partner with high schools, technical schools, and community job fairs to connect with individuals who have a passion for hands-on work and a desire to build a rewarding career.
Structured, Real-World Training
The program spans a minimum of 16 months and includes 18 comprehensive training modules (with two modules combined into the Preventative Maintenance module). Each module is designed to build both technical knowledge and practical skills through a blended learning approach:
- AC Delco online training and testing
- In-house classroom instruction
- Direct, supervised hands-on shop experience
- Supported field diagnostics and repair work
Each module typically takes 30 days to complete and includes:
- Up to eight hours of online training
- Up to eight hours of classroom training
- 16–32 hours of direct supervised hands-on experience
- An additional 120 hours of supported hands-on application
This layered approach ensures apprentices understand theory, terminology, diagnostics, disassembly and reassembly, adjustments, and real-world troubleshooting, all while working with the specific vehicle types in their location. Progress is carefully documented through an apprentice training tracker, with designated technicians and shop managers guiding and verifying each stage of development.
Tools, Mentorship, and Support
From day one, MTM Transit invests in our apprentices. Each participant receives a toolbox and base set of tools to use throughout the program. Upon successful completion, as well as a two-year commitment to continue employment with MTM Transit, those tools become the technician’s personal starter set.
Apprentices work alongside experienced A-level and Lead Technicians who serve as dedicated mentors. These trainers receive additional compensation for their time spent coaching and developing apprentices, reinforcing MTM Transit’s commitment to quality instruction. Maintenance managers and supervisors also provide ongoing guidance and support throughout the program.
Competitive Pay and Clear Advancement
Apprentices are paid at an entry-level wage specific to their location or contract, with union agreements honored where applicable.
Upon successful completion of all modules, technicians advance to the next level, equipped with the knowledge, certifications, tools, and real-world experience needed to succeed in a long-term maintenance career.
Investing in the Future of Transit
At MTM Transit, we understand that maintaining safe, dependable vehicles requires skilled professionals who are confident in their craft. By launching the Maintenance Apprentice Technician Program, we’re not only addressing an industry-wide workforce challenge—we’re creating sustainable career pathways and strengthening our operations for years to come.
This program represents more than training. It represents opportunity, mentorship, and a commitment to building the next generation of transit maintenance professionals.
